Josie's new talents: (well, some of them she's done for a while)
*says "Mama" and "Mom"-she sometimes is definitely referring to me, other times she just says it when she is sad or wants something. Of course, she will not do it on command or when anyone else is listening.
*Knows the words "Mama," "Dada," "book," "peekaboo"and "ball." She will crawl to her book or ball if you talk about them and they are in her line of sight. She probably knows other words, but these ones are obvious.
*Plays ball with us- We will roll the ball to her and she will swat it back to us. She is capable of picking it up, but instead she tries to roll it just like we do! Every time she rolls it back, we say "good job!" and she gets excited.
*Loves playing peekaboo with her blanket- if I talk about peekaboo when she is holding a blanket, she will get excited, put the blanket up to her face and wait for me to cover her and say "peekaboo" So cute!
* She is (finally) sleeping through the night consistently now.
My experience with sleep............
Up until 6 months, she was pretty much up every 3-5 hours. From 6-7 months she started to sleep through one or two of her normal wakings. I never really minded that much since she would go back down quickly after I went into nurse her. In fact, I kinda enjoyed our time together in the wee hours snuggling in the darkness. I have found that I have really gotten used to less sleep and don't feel tired that often. Anyway, at around 7 months she started really sleeping longer. It became very obvious when she really was hungary and needed to be fed and when she was just really tired and needed to cry for a minute and go to sleep. Up until 6 months, I don't think the cry it out thing was right for her. Now, sometimes she just needs to cry a little so she can fall asleep. I feel like I've gotten pretty good at deciding when she really needs me and when she is just whining cause she doesn't want to go to bed yet. I am glad she has naturally started sleeping longer without me having to force her to cry for hours on end.
Here is what I have found is the key for sleeping well at night and at naptime:
#1-Good naps during the day
I'm not sure if this works for every child, but I have found that if she has great naps during the day, she sleeps great at night. If she has great sleep at night, she tends to take better naps. On the other hand, if she misses a nap or doesn't sleep enough during the day, it creates this domino effect. She will sleep miserably at night and it will create a new pattern until I force her to get caught up on sleep. So, I pretty much am hard-core about her naps. I make sure she has at least 3 hours worth of naps a day. I also scoff at anyone who tells me "Oh, babies are so flexable. Give her a nap later" or people that think I am a cruel mom for forcing her (seemingly against her will) to take a nap. Trust me. She really is miserable if I don't stick to this. Usually, if she is on this schedule, she will sleep 12-13 hours at night (usually at least 10 hours in a row), take a 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap in the morning, and a 1-2 hour nap in the after noon.
#2-Make sure she goes to bed early enough
I guess this goes along with making sure she gets enough sleep, but we have found a bedtime that works very well for her. We used to put her down between 8 and 9, and she would not sleep so well, even if it was for the same amount of time combined. Now, we put her down at 7 or 7:30 and she actually sleeps in longer. Go figure.
So, the end result is a very happy, well-rested, easy baby. She goes to bed at around 7:15, sleeps till 5 am. Goes back to sleep after I nurse her until 8. Goes down for a nap at 10 for 2 hours and again at 3 for 1-2 hours and is in bed again at 7:15. Amazing.
* Side note- I really am glad I was patient with her sleep. I know there are many people who say that babies should be sleeping through the night (8+ hours) at 3 or 4 months. I know there are babies that do this, but I think they are rare. I always hear people that are frustrated about there 4 or 5 month old who is still waking up 2 or 3 times a night. They are not alone!! It is totally normal. I realize if you really need sleep or you have more than one child, you may need to force your baby to sleep longer. I really do think it is just fine if you baby doesn't sleep through the night at such a young age. They all eventually do anyway. I really am saying this because I have read so many peoples posts about how they are worried because their 3 month old must be waking up too much because they are not sleeping 8 hours at a time. If your baby doesn't sleep through the night yet, it's ok! Don't let others with their 4-month-old-that-sleeps-12-hours-at-a-time make you doubt your mothering skills. If you are one of those with that 12 hour 4 month old, what a lucky duck you are!!
